Harris County

Harris County is located in Texas.  The big old great State of Texas.  Here is a little background information about Harris County, in case you aren’t sure of where we are and how we’ve evolved.  And most importantly, how we got to where we are today.

Within the Houston–Sugar Land–Baytown metropolitan area, Harris county has a population of 4.1 million according to the 2010 census. (Wikipedia.)  This makes it the4 most populous county in the State and the third most populated in the country.  Founded in 1836, it’s County Seat is Houston.

Harris County is named for John Richardson Harris, who was an early settler in what now is called Harris County.

Geography information of Harris County:

Going back to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county is made up of an area of 1,778 square miles (4,605.0 km2), of which 1,729 square miles (4,478.1 km2) is land and 49 square miles (126.9 km2) (2.75%) is water.  This amount of land makes it larger than the entire State of Rhode Island.  That is a HUGE county.

Many major highways roll through the county, including highways 3, 6, 146, 225, 249, 288 and Beltway 8.

Boasting almost 4 MILLION people, this is a huge portion of the State of Texas.  Hispanics make up a large portion, accounting for almost 38% of the populous.

Other facts about Harris County, Texas:

  • Companies choosing to make the area their corporate headquarters include: Administaff, Compaq, Continental Airlines, Memorial Hermann Healthcare System, and Southwestern Bell

It’s worth noting the area is generally Republican.

Odd fact about Harris County:  J. Howard Marshall, who was the late husband of Anna Nicole Smith, died in Harris County in 1995.

Scary fact:  Harris county has the most tornado warnings of all counties.

Even scarier fact:  Harris County has sent more people to the death chamber than any other county.
